Excavations in the ancient city of Persepolis, founded by Darius the Great, have revealed artifacts and depictions of people engaged in carpet weaving. It is believed that the art of carpet weaving flourished during the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BCE).

During the Safavid dynasty (1501–1736), the art of carpet weaving reached its pinnacle. The Safavid rulers were great patrons of the arts, and they established royal carpet workshops to produce high-quality carpets for the court and export. These carpets were often adorned with intricate patterns, floral motifs, and elaborate borders. The city of Isfahan became a major center for carpet production during this period.
