HISTORY OF CARPETS OF IRAN

The art of weaving hand-knotted carpets and kilims in Iran has a rich and ancient history that spans thousands of years. The origins of Persian carpet weaving can be traced back to ancient times. The earliest evidence of carpet weaving in the region dates back to the Bronze Age, around 2500 BCE. Excavations in the ancient city of Persepolis, founded by Darius the Great, have revealed artifacts and depictions of people engaged in carpet weaving. It is believed that the art of carpet weaving flourished during the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BCE).

During the Safavid dynasty (1501–1736), the art of carpet weaving reached its pinnacle. The Safavid rulers were great patrons of the arts, and they established royal carpet workshops to produce high-quality carpets for the court and export. These carpets were often adorned with intricate patterns, floral motifs, and elaborate borders. The city of Isfahan became a major center for carpet production during this period.

Lori rugs are a finer variant of the gabbeh traditionally knotted by the Lurs. The Lurs are a tribe in southwest Persia, also known as Loristan. Lori also Luri carpets are also known as Lori baft. The additional syllable “baft” means something like “tied”.
