HISTORY OF CARPETS OF IRAN

The art of weaving hand-knotted carpets and kilims in Iran has a rich and ancient history that spans thousands of years. Iranian carpets are renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship, intricate designs, and vibrant colors. The tradition of carpet weaving in Iran is deeply rooted in the culture and has been passed down through generations.

The origins of Persian carpet weaving can be traced back to ancient times. The earliest evidence of carpet weaving in the region dates back to the Bronze Age, around 2500 BCE. Excavations in the ancient city of Persepolis, founded by Darius the Great, have revealed artifacts and depictions of people engaged in carpet weaving. It is believed that the art of carpet weaving flourished during the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BCE).

During the Safavid dynasty (1501–1736), the art of carpet weaving reached its pinnacle. The Safavid rulers were great patrons of the arts, and they established royal carpet workshops to produce high-quality carpets for the court and export. These carpets were often adorned with intricate patterns, floral motifs, and elaborate borders. The city of Isfahan became a major center for carpet production during this period.

The hand-knotted carpet weaving process in Iran involves skilled artisans who use traditional techniques passed down through generations. The foundation of the carpet is usually made of cotton or wool, and the pile, which forms the visible surface, is also made of wool or, in some cases, silk. Silk carpets are highly prized for their luxurious feel and sheen.

The process of creating a hand-knotted carpet is labor-intensive and requires a high level of skill. The weaver follows a pattern known as a “cartoon,” which serves as a guide for the design. Each knot is tied by hand around the warp threads, and the weaver must pay careful attention to the tension and density of the knots to ensure a uniform surface.

Different regions in Iran are known for their distinct carpet-weaving styles and designs. For example, some cities.

Isfahan Carpets

Known for their intricate designs and central medallions, Isfahan carpets often feature floral motifs, intricate arabesques, and a wide range of colors.

Tabriz Carpets

Tabriz, one of the oldest carpet-weaving centers in Iran, is known for its diverse designs, ranging from medallion patterns to all-over motifs. The city produces carpets of various sizes and qualities.

Kashan Carpets

Kashan carpets are recognized for their fine craftsmanship and traditional designs. They often feature a central medallion and intricate floral or geometric patterns.

Heriz Carpets

Hailing from the Heriz region, these carpets are known for their bold geometric designs and a characteristic medallion in the center. They are often woven with a thick pile and are durable.

Lori Baft Carpets

Lori rugs are a finer variant of the gabbeh traditionally knotted by the Lurs. The Lurs are a tribe in southwest Persia, also known as Loristan. Lori also Luri carpets are also known as Lori baft. The additional syllable “baft” means something like “tied”.

Iranian carpets continue to be highly sought after in the international market for their quality and artistic value. The tradition of hand-knotted carpet weaving remains strong, with skilled artisans employing both traditional and contemporary designs. The industry has adapted to modern technology for tasks like dyeing and spinning, but the core weaving process remains a meticulous and labor-intensive craft.
Despite challenges, including economic sanctions and competition from machine-made carpets, Iranian weavers and carpet producers strive to preserve their cultural heritage. The unique designs, patterns, and quality of Iranian hand-knotted carpets and kilims continue to captivate collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, ensuring the enduring legacy of this ancient craft.
